Stability inside hen eggs of a Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis bacteriophage Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Robeson,James; Valencia,Martina; Retamales,Julio; Borie,Consuelo.
Background: Bacteriophages are viruses that infect bacteria and therefore are widespread in nature. Those that lyse the pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) should be expected in niches in which this bacterium thrives, among others the avian egg. Furthermore, bacteriophages could remain viable in this milieu. Results: Upon artificially infecting hen eggs with the SE bacteriophage f18 we found that the bacteriophage titer remains stable at least for up to 144 hrs post-infection , both in yolk and albumen at 25ºC. Conclusion: Bacteriophage f18 withstands the physico-chemical conditions of the egg inner milieu and could be considered for SE-controlling measures in the poultry industry.

Review of the breeding status of birds in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Maurício,Giovanni N.; Bencke,Glayson Ariel; Repenning,Márcio; Machado,Diogenes Borges; Dias,Rafael A.; Bugoni,Leandro.
Information on the breeding biology of birds is essential for improving avian life-history theory and implementing sound management and conservation actions for these organisms. Comprehensive reviews of this kind of information are lacking for most Neotropical regions, including Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost Brazilian state. Aiming to update the knowledge on the reproductive status of birds in Rio Grande do Sul, we reviewed breeding records of all potential breeding species recorded in the state using a set of predefined, restrictive criteria for accepting breeding evidences as effective. Data satisfying our criteria were available for 165 species in the literature. We also collected novel breeding information obtained in the state for an additional...

La production chez les crustacés. Rôle dans les écosystèmes et utilisations ArchiMer
Khmeleva, N; Goloubev, A.
This monograph is the first to state by a systematic research the rules which control the production of the organic losses in shape of eggs and exoskeletons during the life of Crustacea. The weight and the energy content of the material thrown out are the chief criteria selected to characterize the germinal production, relative to the egg-mass, and the exuvial production, relative to the organic fraction of the exoskeleton. The determination of these parameters, at the level of the organism or of the population, takes into account the systematic position of the animals, the duration of their intermolt periods, fecundity and other indices in relation to environmental factors. The loss of matter and energy with reproduction and molting(studied for different...

Le système immunitaire du bar Dicentrarchus labrax. Immunoglobulines, cellules productrices d'immunoglobulines, ontogenèse applications à une pathologie virale néonatale ArchiMer
Breuil, Gilles.
The sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, has been subjected to intensive aquaculture on the Mediterranean cost for ten years. Marine fish hatcheries are key factors in the aquaculture field, and face different pathologies, especially one of viral origin (nodavirus) that could challenge their feasibility. Consequently, we have tried to provide some data on larvae and spawning stocks. Firstly, we have studied the immunoglobulins, components of the specific humoral immunity, and their role as antibodies. On adult basses, these immunoglobulins are tetrameric molecules with high molecular weight (850 kD), made of heavy (H) - 80 kD and light (L) - 26 kD chains. In the eggs, simplest forms such as monomeric or dimeric are brought to the fore; they are located under...

Extra-Renal Lesion Caused by Dioctophyma renale Eggs in an Erratic Cycle in a Dog International Journal of Morphology
Lemos,Luciana da Silva; Santos,Alessa Siqueira de Oliveira dos; Rodrigues,Ana Bárbara Freitas; Goulart,Maria Laudelina Vieira Seródio; Almeida,Luciano Grillo de; Silveira,Leonardo Serafim da.
A dog with multiple infection by D. renale in the abdominal cavity presented granular peritonitis with giant cells phagocytizing D. renale eggs. Hepatic and phrenic serositis associated to numerous eggs of the parasite immersed in fibrinous process were observed. Lungs presented D. renale eggs in the parenchyma, mononucleated cell infiltrates, edema, hemorrhage, congestion, atelectasia, emphysema, and thromboembolism. D. renale eggs were detected inside the center-lobular veins, auricular cavities, and superficial venous bed of the heart. These findings characterized an atypical dissemination pathway of eggs in erratic cycle.

Immature stages and phylogenetic importance of Astrapaeus, a rove beetle genus of puzzling systematic position (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Staphylinini) Naturalis
Pietrykowska-Tudruj, E.; Staniec, B.; Wojas, T.; Alexey, A..
For the first time eggs, larvae and pupae obtained by rearing are described for Astrapaeus, a monotypic West Palearctic rove beetle genus of a puzzling phylogenetic position within the megadiverse tribe Staphylinini. Morphology of the immature stages of Astrapaeus ulmi is compared to that of other members of the tribe and discussed in a phylogenetic context. Contrary to conventional systematics and in accordance with recently developed phylogenetic hypotheses based on morphology of adults, larval morphology supports the non-Quediina affiliation of Astrapaeus. Eggs and pupae provided fewer characters with putative phylogenetic signal. Under laboratory conditions, a peculiar preference for isopod prey was observed for A. ulmi. However, this could not be...

Morphology of the immatures and biology of Chinavia longicorialis (Breddin) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) Neotropical Entomology
Matesco,Viviana C; Schwertner,Cristiano F; Grazia,Jocelia.
Chinavia longicorialis (Breddin) is recorded only in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay on host plants of at least three different families. Adults and nymphs were reared under standard controlled conditions (24 ± 1°C; 70 ± 10% RH; 12hL:12hD), and fed on green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Eggs and first instars of C. longicorialis are very similar to those of other species of Chinavia; however, the presence of orange maculae at the thoracic pleura is exclusive of first instars of C. longicorialis. Third to fifth instars have abdominal maculae divided by pseudo-sutures, a diagnostic feature of C. longicorialis nymphs. Light and dark morphs were observed for third, fourth and fifth instars. Head width measurements did not overlap between consecutive instars....

Unusual Oviposition Behavior by a Seed Feeding Bug (Heteroptera: Rhopalidae) Neotropical Entomology
PANIZZI,ANTÔNIO R.; HIROSE,EDSON; CHOCOROSQUI,VIVIANE R..
Jadera choprai Göllner-Scheiding (Heteroptera: Rhopalidae) feeds on the ground on mature seeds of Cardiospermum halicacabum (L.) (Sapindaceae). Laboratory observations indicated that females dug a hole of ca. 0.5 cm in the the soil with the forelegs, laid eggs, and covered them with lose soil. In artificial conditions, females buried the eggs in over 60 % of the ovipositions, and nymphs were able to reach the soil surface from eggs buried 4 cm. This oviposition behavior is rare among seed suckers heteropterans, that usually oviposit on host plants.

Korzelecka-Orkisz,Agata; Szalast,Zuzanna; Pawlos,Dorota; Smaruj,Izabella; Tañski,Adam; Szulc,Joanna; Formicki,Krzysztof.
This study describes the egg membrane structures of angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare), morpho-physiological changes during angelfish embryogenesis from activation to hatching under optimal conditions (28°C; pH 6.8), the developing larvae and fry, the effect of alkaline pH on the early developmental stages of the species, the relationship between food item size and fry survival. Egg membranes (thin, transparent, 1.67-2.18 µm thick) are covered by a sticky substance. The amber-coloured angelfish eggs were oval in shape, with average diameters of 1.436 and 1.171 mm, i.e., a mean volume of 1.033 ± 0.095 mm³. The survival rate of embryos and larvae kept in water with an elevated, slightly alkaline pH was very low: as few as 2% of the embryos survived, while in...

Fatty acid profile of eggs of semi-heavy layers fed feeds containing linseed oil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Souza,JG; Costa,FGP; Queiroga,RCRE; Silva,JHV; Schuler,ARP; Goulart,CC.
The incorporation of polyunsaturated fatty acids in chicken eggs by adding oils to the diets has been extensively studied. This experiment aimed at evaluating possible changes in the fatty acid profile of the eggs of layers fed diets supplemented with linseed and soybean oils. The experiment was performed using 192 29 week-old laying hens, distributed in a completely randomized design, into six treatments with four replicates of eight birds each. Treatments consisted of a control diet (no vegetable oil) and diets including 2% of vegetable oil. Linseed oil replaced 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% soybean oil in the diets, corresponding to 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0% of linseed oil in the diet. A pool of two egg yolks from each treatment was submitted to lipid...

Studies on carbon-13 turnover in eggs and blood of commercial layers Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Denadai,JC; Ducatti,C; Pezzato,AC; Carrijo,AS; Caldara,FR; Oliveira,RP.
This paper aimed at evaluating the influence of diets containing different isotopic values of carbon-13 turnover on the half-life of egg (yolk + albumen), yolk and albumen individually, and blood of poultry using delta‰13C isotopic variation. Commercial layers fed four experimental isocaloric and isonitrogenous diets (RC4, RC3, RMC4 and RMC3) containing different isotopic values, during an experimental period of 56 days. Turnover of the studied tissues was influenced by the experimental diets. Blood and albumen were more influenced by dietary treatments as compared to egg and yolk. The RMC3 diet induced better performance (better feed intake and higher egg production) due faster rate of carbon substitution than the RC4 diet, and lower half-life for egg...
